Biochem/physiol Actions
Hyocholic acid levels are elevated in plasma and urine samples of patients with cholestatic liver disease and in hepatic cirrhosis.
General description
Hyocholic acid, also called the 3α,6α,7α-trihydroxy-5β-cholanoic acid, is synthesized by the 6α-hydroxylation of chenodeoxycholic acid. It is a primary trihydroxylated bile acid associated with pigs. It is a minor bile acid in humans. Hyocholic acid is also synthesized from α-muricholic acid (MCA) in liver by the action of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).
